If you liked our Uganda Bwindi Natural from last year, this is the coffee for you. It hails from the Rwenzori Mountains of Western Uganda, just 90mi north of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and right across the border with Congo. It’s home to the Bukonzo Joint co-op, which stands as an excellent example of the good that coffee can bring to communities and nature alike.

Started in 1999 with just six farmers in a region that was isolated and marginalized due to conflicts of the past, it has grown to include 72 member groups and over 5,500 farmers, dozens of full-time staff members, and hundreds of volunteers. Membership is comprised of a whopping 83% women split. Their beans are certified organic and fair trade, and that’s only the beginning of their success. The co-op has become a stabilizing institution in the region, offering microloans to small businesses, as well as agricultural tools, training, and upskilling for its members.  They’ve even added health services for pregnant mothers to their community clinic. Climate-savvy practices to minimize erosion and maximize soil health. Gender equality training. It’s a model of success in so many ways, and we hope to feature more of their beans in the future.

As for the coffee, it’s a sweet-lover’s dream. We get cherry, strawberry, cola, and fig notes. So smooth. It’s a delicious cup both hot and cold—if you do brew it hot, make sure to taste it again as it cools—which makes it perfect for these cool spring days.

Limited to one bag per purchase.
